Cryosurgery, also called cryotherapy or cryoblation, treats localized prostate cancer by freezing the cells. A physician makes an incision between the scrotum and the rectum, and guides a metal probe into the prostate using ultrasound. Warm saltwater circulated through a catheter keeps the urethra from freezing. It is not yet known if long-term survival rates are on par with other treatments, and the procedure is usually only recommended for men with certain serious conditions that make them unable to tolerate surgery or radiation therapy.

Cryosurgery is less invasive than radical prostatectomy, but the vast majority of patients experience impotence following the procedure.10 In addition, some may experience urinary complications such as incontinence, obstruction (blockage of urine flow) and fistula (abnormal passageway between the urethra and rectum), as well as bowel irritation.

TheraSeed® Treatment Advantages:

Independent clinical studies spanning 12 years prove the effectiveness of TheraSeed® treatment. Current cryosurgery techniques have not been in use for nearly the same length of time.
With cryosurgery, the vast majority of men experience impotence.10
Most brachytherapy patients go home a few hours after the procedure. Cryrosurgery usually requires a one- or two-night hospital stay.
